How to Lose Belly Fat: What Actually Works (and 5 Myths to Ignore)
Crunches, jeera water and fat burners will not shift belly fat. Here is what the evidence says actually works, and why Indians should watch their waist closely.

Quick answer: You cannot burn belly fat by doing crunches. Belly fat, especially the deeper visceral fat around your organs, comes down when you lose fat overall: a steady calorie deficit, high protein, regular strength training and walking, 7–9 hours of sleep, and less alcohol and sugary drinks. For South Asian adults, aim to bring your waist below 90 cm (men) or 80 cm (women).
Belly fat is the most common reason people start a diet. It is also where the most myths live. Let us separate what actually works from what wastes your time.
This article is general information, not medical advice. If you have a health condition or take medication, talk to your doctor before making big changes.
Why belly fat matters more for Indians
There are two types of belly fat:
- Subcutaneous fat: the soft fat you can pinch, just under the skin.
- Visceral fat: deeper fat around your liver and other organs. This is the one linked to type 2 diabetes, fatty liver and heart disease.
Many South Asians carry more visceral fat at a lower body weight than other populations. That is why someone can look "not that fat" and still have a large waist, high blood sugar or a fatty liver. It is also why the waist cutoffs for South Asians are lower: 90 cm for men and 80 cm for women.
How to measure your waist correctly
Stand relaxed, breathe out normally, and measure midway between your lowest rib and the top of your hip bone. Measure every two weeks, at the same time of day.
5 belly fat myths
Myth 1: Crunches burn belly fat
Ab exercises strengthen muscles, but they do not burn the fat on top of them. Studies of people doing weeks of ab-only training show little to no change in belly fat. You cannot spot-reduce.
Myth 2: Some foods melt belly fat
Jeera water, lemon water, green tea and apple cider vinegar do not burn fat in any meaningful amount. They are fine to drink, but they are not the solution.
Myth 3: You must stop eating rice
Rice is not uniquely fattening. Large portions of anything, eaten in a surplus, cause fat gain. A measured cup of rice fits in a fat loss diet.
Myth 4: Skipping meals is the fastest way
Skipping meals often leads to overeating later. What matters is your total intake over the day and week.
Myth 5: Fat loss supplements work
Almost all "fat burner" products have little evidence behind them, and some carry real risks.
What actually works
1. A consistent calorie deficit
Eat about 300–500 kcal less than you burn each day. Visceral fat is usually among the first to respond when overall fat loss begins. See our 7-day Indian weight loss meal plan for a practical structure.
2. High protein at every meal
Protein keeps you full and protects muscle while you diet. Aim for 1.2–1.6 g per kg of body weight daily, or more if you lift weights. Here is how to calculate your protein needs.
3. Strength training 2–4 times a week
Building and keeping muscle raises how many calories you burn and improves how your body handles blood sugar. Compound movements like squats, rows, push-ups and deadlifts give the most return.
4. Walk more
Aim for 8,000–10,000 steps a day. Walking is low-stress, easy to recover from, and adds up to hundreds of extra calories burned. A 30-minute walk after dinner also helps blunt the blood sugar rise after a meal.
5. Sleep 7–9 hours
Short sleep is linked with more hunger, more cravings, and greater fat gain over time. If you sleep five hours, your diet has to fight your hormones.
6. Cut liquid calories and alcohol
Sweetened coffee and tea, packaged juices, soft drinks and alcohol add calories without filling you up. Two sweet teas a day can add 150–200 kcal.
7. Watch the oil, not just the food
A dish can look healthy and still carry three tablespoons of oil, which is about 360 kcal. Measure oil at home, and be careful with restaurant food. Our calories in South Indian food guide shows where the hidden calories are.
How long does it take?
Most people who stay consistent see their waist start to shrink within 3–4 weeks. Losing 0.5–1% of body weight per week is a healthy pace. Belly fat is often among the last fat to fully disappear, so keep going even when the scale slows.
Make the hard part automatic
The three things that matter most for belly fat are calorie control, high protein and consistency, and they are exactly the three things that are hardest to manage with a busy schedule.

Frequently asked questions
Can I lose belly fat in 7 days? You can lose some water weight and bloating in a week, which may make your stomach look flatter. Real fat loss takes weeks of consistency.
Is walking enough to lose belly fat? Walking helps a lot, but it works best combined with a calorie deficit and strength training.
Does stress cause belly fat? Chronic stress can increase appetite and cravings and disturb sleep, all of which make fat loss harder. Managing stress and sleep is part of the solution.
Why do I have belly fat even though I am thin? This is common in South Asians and is often visceral fat. Measuring your waist, and checking blood sugar and liver health with your doctor, is a good step.
